Marco Verratti’s agent tells Chelsea how they can beat Barcelona to his transfer

Italian international Verratti is regarded as one of Europe’s most accomplished passers and has been attracting interest from Chelsea and Barcelona this summer. And his agent, Donato Di Campli, says any offers will be given careful consideration this summer, with the club’s project and aspirations most important to him. ‘It’s very complicated [to leave], but we have expressed our ideas to PSG,’ he told Sky Italia. ‘We’re not talking about Barcelona or other clubs, it’s about projects.

‘I think I represent a champion and clearly I have questions. To be a champion you have to win.

‘If PSG don’t want to sell him, despite offers from all over Europe, then we’d have to examine our consciences in Italy.’

Di Campli also suggested no Italian club could afford Verratti, adding: ‘I think it’s a deal which is still out of the scope of Italian clubs.’ Barcelona were beaten to the Liga title by Real Madrid this summer, while Chelsea can offer Verratti the champion pedigree he wants. PSG are believed to be desperate to do everything possible to keep the Italian at the Parc des Princes, though Barca are rumoured to be ready to test that resolve with an €88 million (£77m) offer. New Barca boss Ernesto Valverde wants Verratti after giving up on Ander Herrera.

Another advantage Chelsea could have over Barca is Antonio Conte’s pre-existing relationship with Verratti, who he managed with the Italian national team. Bayern Munich are also thought to be keen on Verratti, with Carlo Ancelotti signing him back in 2012, but the Germans could be priced out of a move if Barca and Chelsea get into a bidding war.
